The Road to Damascus

Throughout my mission, we have often found people who want us to prove that what we say is true, before they can believe it. They find themselves waiting on that road to Damascus.

But unfortunately, you cannot learn spiritual truth through physical matters.

Just like you cannot solve an english problem using a math equation, you cannot find the answer to a spiritual question, using temporal means.

Paul demonstrates this matter in 1 Corinthians 2:9-14 where he wrote:

11 For what man aknoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God bknoweth no man, cbut the dSpirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the aspirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s awisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost bteacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the anatural man breceiveth not the things of the cSpirit of God: for they are dfoolishness unto him: neither can he eknow them, because they are fspiritually gdiscerned.

They must be spiritually discerned and we must compare spiritual with spiritual. We cannot learn any spiritual truth by trying to find the physical evidence, for it is only taught by and through the spirit, and is only received by and through the spirit.

Sadly, there are so many who fall under the category of the natural man outlined in verse 14. They see the things of God as foolishness, because they cannot be proven physically to them. However, this idea in itself is foolishness. They persist to rely on upon the merit and learning of men, who are imperfect and have many faults. How often have "facts" had to be changed or taken back due to new research and new findings that beforehand were thought to be concrete and unshakeable. That is how science works, because we do not know all things, we are constantly learning. However, God knows all things, and he is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever (Heb. 13:8)." The facts that God reveals to us are permanent, and because they are, they must be revealed to us in a permanent way. A way that is much more direct and lasting, than any other method of physical learning.

You must find the answer from the source of which your question stems. If you want to learn a spiritual truth, you must ask God. Moroni, in his final words taught the key to learning such truths concerning the Book of Mormon and all other spiritual questions when he said:

"4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would aask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not btrue; and if ye shall ask with a csincere heart, with dreal intent, having efaith in Christ, he will fmanifest the gtruth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may aknow the btruth of all things. (Moroni 10:4-5)"

The true seeker of truth must exercise their faith, ask God with a sincere desire to know, and real intent to act upon the answer which they receive.

"6 And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith. (Ether 12:6)"

When this course is taken correctly, and the seed of faith is nourished and grows as outlined in Alma 32, the seeker of truth will come to find the evidence of what they have been learning. The evidence that comes from the ultimate source of all knowledge, God himself, through the power of the Holy Ghost. There is no greater witness than that of the Holy Ghost.

"Faith and love are apt to be spasmodic in the best minds. Men live the brink of mysteries and harmonies into which they never enter, and with their hands on the door-latch they die outside." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Its waiting there, and all you have to do is open the door.
